Within close proximity to ancient Greek monuments are some of the best restaurants in Athens, with award-winning chefs. Where foodies can experience fine dining of the 21st century against a backdrop as old as 800BC. During our food tours in Athens, our tour guides will be more than happy to point you in the direction of their favourite restaurants.

While some traditional Greek food experiences in Athens take place on the streets or thanks to traditional home cooking, here we look at modern fine dining. Including Michelin Starred restaurants and those that are bringing age-old Greek traditions to the new world.

6 of the Best Restaurants in Athens

Food tourism in Greece is almost as popular as the ancient artefacts on display at the world-famous museums. However, if you wish to escape the food markets and local cafés, there are an abundance of high-end restaurants to choose from.

Spondi

Recognised as one of the best restaurants in Athens, there’s a reason Spondi has been awarded 2 Michelin Stars. The menu changes depending what’s in season, while visually many dishes are far removed from what you may expect the food to resemble.

Head chef Angelos Lantos honours French cuisine, balancing classic cookery alongside the imaginative presentation. Knowing the time to remain classic and when to turn experimental.

Recommended Dish: Milk Fed Lamb

GB Roof Garden

What could be better than el fresco dining while overlooking the Acropolis? Well, that’s just one of the reasons to book a table at the GB Roof Garden. Another, of course, is due to the sheer quality of the Michelin Star foodie experience.

Within easy access of nearby tourism and busy attractions, food tours in Athens rarely come much better than this, with the restaurant of Hotel Grand Bretagne remains a popular choice. Although don’t expect to just walk in and take a seat, as you will be competing for a table with the locals.

Recommended Dish: Slow Cooked Pork Cheeks

Funky Gourmet

After 10 years in the business, Funky Gourmet has recently relocated premises.  Although certainly remains one of the best restaurants in Athens. It too was awarded a Michelin Star in 2012, with a second added 2 years later.

The playful take on Greek classics creates an air of anticipation among diners. The tasting menu takes you through a journey of modern gastronomy, albeit with tastes that encompass the essence and flavours of Greece.

Recommended Dish: Greek Bottarga Tartlet

Varoulko

In 2002 Lefteris Lazarou was awarded a Michelin Star for his restaurant in Piraeus, a taste of which he now brings to Athens. Situated in the Mikrolimano marina, the seafood restaurant uses freshly caught produce with a desire to recreate a trip to the seaside.

While there’s a more relaxed lunchtime menu available, visitors should return for an evening meal and the more elegant fine-dining.

Recommended Dish: Grilled cuttlefish with caramelized lentils and orange sauce.

Hytra

The moment you step out the lift at the Onassis Cultural Centre, you will be welcomed into one of the best food experiences in Athens.

The views from the 6th-floor restaurant overlook the busy streets of Syngrou avenue, as you relax and watch the world go by. Classic Greek cooking is recreated with modern techniques in the Michelin Star restaurant. Alternatively, you can simply admire the views while dining at the bar from the alternative bistro menu.

Recommended Dish: Black Pork

Strofi

Here you will be tasting a piece of Greek history, at the long-standing Strofi Restaurant in the heart of Athens. Serving locals and international foodies since 1975 with flavours of Greek and Mediterranean cuisine.

While we would often advise venturing away from the tourist haunts, Strofi is literally in the shadows of the Acropolis. Which in this case, really does give you a fine dining experience to remember.

Recommended Dish: Grilled Fillet of Beef
