Varna is the biggest city on the Bulgarian Black Sea Coast. The local cuisine is heavily influenced by fresh fish and other types of seafood along with chicken, pork and delicious vegetables with mild spices. Varna offers many of the same dishes you may find in neighbouring Balkan cities but with a unique Bulgarian twist and local flavours.

Best dishes to Experience in Varna

You might be familiar with the Greek version of Moussaka, but the Bulgarian version is definitely one to try. The main difference is that it is made with potatoes rather than aubergine.

Meat lovers might want to try a mixed grill called ‘Meshana Skara’, considered by many Bulgarians to be their best dish. It usually contains pork steaks, kebapche, kufte and meat skewers. Vegetarian dishes include vine leaves with spiced rice called Sarmi and freshly baked flatbread. Salads are a staple part of the Bulgarian diet especially Shopska.

Desserts such as Tikvenik (dough with pumpkin and walnuts) and Torta Garash (dark chocolate layered between walnut sponges) are firm favourites amongst the Bulgarians too.

Rakia is the local (extremely strong!) alcoholic drink and is usually served in very generous quantities. It may be served with salad, cheeses or cured meat.
