Brief History of Stonehenge

While the exact origins of Stonehenge are largely unknown, over the years, there have been many theories. Albeit some of which have come about through years of research regarding the prehistoric monument. Not only that, but Stonehenge also attracts 100’s of visitors every day. Many of whom, following the myths and legends that come with the stone circle.

Dating back to the Neolithic age, initial work on Stonehenge is believed to have started on Salisbury Plain around 2500 BC. The prehistoric site consisting of a number of large sarsen stones, on average weighing around an impressive 25 tonnes each.

It’s largely believed that Stonehenge was built for one of two reasons. The first being as a study of the sun and the moon, while the second becoming a sacred ground, surrounded by special healing qualities.

Since it’s existence the attraction has been visited by those looking for spiritual enlightenment, pagan/druid worshippers and the general public. In particular, during the likes of both the longest day of the year (Summer Solstice/Midsummer’s Day) and again at the Winter Solstice (Midwinter’s Day).

About Stonehenge Brewery

Stonehenge Ales Ltd is less than 15 minutes from the ancient site, offering a taste of locally brewed real ales. Where each beer is lovingly made with malt, whole hops and Stonehenge’s very own spring water. As such a brewery tour from Bathis the ideal way to get a feel for the ancient site.

Continuing to use traditional brewing methods, Stonehenge Brewery has been producing real ale since 1984.

The building is converted from “the Old Mill”, which sits along the banks of a picturesque River Avon. Originally designed as an electricity generator, the vision wasn’t able to prove cost-effective. Closing down to eventually make way for the Stonehenge Brewery in 1983.

However, 10 years later, master brewer Stig Anker Andersen relocated with his family from Denmark and took over the business in 1993. Since then, Stonehenge Brewery Tours have gone from strength to strength.

As too, of course, have their much-loved beers and ales. With the likes of Pigswill Best Bitter and Danish Dynamite, now being served up and down the country.
