As one of the leading wine producers, deciding which wine regions in Spain to experience can be a tough decision. Although wine tours from Barcelona and throughout Spain are the perfect way to decide which you think is best.

Within recent years, Spain has started to surpass the competition in terms of volume of wine being manufactured. However, no matter which way interpret the figures, it’s clear that the world’s top 3 wine producers remain Spain, France and Italy.

8 of the Best Wine Regions in Spain

Officially there are over 100 areas within Spain recognised as their own, individual wine regions. As such, we help take a look at 8 of the best wine regions in Spain. Many of which are available to visit via our wine tours from Barcelona

Rioja

Possibly the most famous of them all is located towards the North of Spain, with Rioja being known the world over. Traditionally, the Rioja wine region is responsible for fruity red wines with an earthy rich flavour.

Grape varieties include: Tempranillo and Graciano (red) and Viura (white).

Ribera del Duero

Along the banks of the Duero river is another of Spain’s more popular regions. Which, like Rioja, is largely known for its red wines. In fact, Albillo is the only white grape variety that’s native to this particular area of Spain.

Grape varieties include: Tempranillo (red) and Albillo (white).

Penedès

The oldest wine region in Spain can be found within the hills of Serra del Garraf. As such, particularly popular among wine connoisseurs searching for those hard to find bottles of vintage Cava’s.

Grape varieties include: Xarel·lo, Chardonnay and Parellada (white).

Valencia Wine Region

Wine tours in Valencia will take you into vineyards that can also be dated back 1000’s of years. The diversity of the soil makes the Valencia wine region a great introduction to Spanish red wines due to the wide varieties of grape available.

Grape varieties include: Monastrell, Tempranillo, Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot (red).

Prioriat

As with any of our wine tours, if you’re visiting Prioriat we strongly recommend sensible footwear. The slopes of Prioriat aren’t for the faint-hearted, but you will be rewarded with wines with the prestigious DOCa certification.

Grape varieties include: Carignan and Grenache (red), Macabeo and Chenin (white).

The Basque Country

While famous for its food and drink experiences and culture, wine tours in San Sebastian are also ever-popular. Wine in San Sebastian and throughout the Basque Country are split into main types – the traditional Txakoli wines and Rioja Alavesa.

Grape varieties include: Tempranillo and Graciano (red) and Viura (white).

Navarra

While one of the smaller wine regions, Navarra is ideal for those who enjoy a bottle of rosé. The dramatic changes between seasons are also hugely effective in the production of rich bodied reds.

Grape varieties include: Cabernet Sauvignon (red) and Sauvignon Blanc (white)

La Mancha

While the coasts and diverse landscapes result in ideal growing locations, it’s in-fact central Spain that’s home to one of the largest wine-growing regions in the world.

Grape varieties include: Tempranillo (red) and Chardonnay (white).
