Vinho Verde

This wine region is said to be the largest in Portugal (34000 hectares) and starts below the Portuguese/Spanish border, and travels to the Atlantic Ocean and then onto Porto. It has its fair share of rain and produces countless wine types, that are aromatic, refreshing and light.

The name Vinho Verde is also known as ‘Green Wine’, although the wines are red, white and rosé wines. The region also produces sparkling wines of superb quality and is becoming very popular for producing top wines.

Douro e Porto

The Douro Wine Region was established in 1756, and is one of the oldest wine regions in the world. In 2001 it was awarded an UNESCO “World Heritage”. It is about 56 miles from the city of Porto, and that is of course, where the famous Port Wine was born.

The region is amazing with steep slopes, the river Douro and very long mountains that protect the valley from the cold winds that travel from the Atlantic Ocean. The region produces distinctive full-bodied, tannic reds and also refreshing light-bodied white wines. The grape varieties derive from the Middle Ages and produce Port wines such as -Touriga Nacional, Touriga Franca, Tinta Barroca, Aragonez and Tinto Cão.

Bairrada Region

This region has over 10000 hectares of vineyards producing very high-quality wines, such as Baga (red wines) and Bical (white wines). This wines here are full of colour and acidic but still well balanced, with great a long life span.

The DOC of Bairrada allows the planting of international varieties, such as Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, and Pinot Noir. The white variety of Fernão Pires is the more popular one in the region.

Lisbon

The Lisbon wine region is the second-largest producer of wine within Portugal. The fertile soils and a mild climate helps produces inexpensive session wines. The countryside surrounding Lisbon is scattered with wineries supplying plenty of wine-tasting experiences.

Península de Setúbal

The peninsula of Setúbal is included in the Designations of Origin - Palmela and Setúbal. Many of the wines in this region use the variety of Castelão, which produce fruity flavours, like cherry, acorn, chestnut, candied plum, blackberry, and raspberries.

The town of Setúbal is also a good place to start if you wish to visit Palmela and spend some time exploring its magnificent ancient castle.

Alentejo

Alentejo is a hugely respected wine region and is well known for its rich reds. These red wines are traditionally produced from Aragonez, Castelao and Trincadeira, or a rich blend of them all.

Alentejo also produces Syrah and Cabernet Sauvignon. The region is named after its favourable position south of the Tejo river and reaches the ocean close to Lisbon.
