There are so many different types of foodie, however we like to think our food experiences have something for everyone. Although, it can sometimes be hard to follow which foodie you are! Especially when we no longer live in a world simply divided between meat-eaters and vegetarians. There are so many more things to consider, from allergies and intolerances to religious believes and personal lifestyle choices.

What Type of Foodie are You?

Many online articles will separate the food bloggers and gastronomical food critics from those that simply enjoy old-fashioned food experiences. Whereby the home cook that produces a fine Sunday roast for the family, can happily sit alongside someone joining the latest cookery class.

While there isn’t any official or definitive list, the website Best Food Facts have highlighted 12 different types of foodie. Having been responsible for a website that teams up with over 200 food experts, Best Food Facts have derived criteria from years of knowledge and experience.

What are the Different Types of Foodie

The below list takes a look at the 12 different types of foodie, which includes the more common meat-eater and vegetarian options. However, it also features a few lesser-known examples:

    • Meat Eater – while there is always an exception to the rule, a meat-eater will happily eat any type of red or white meat. Along with fish, seafood, fowl, eggs and dairy products such as milk and cheese.
    • Clean Eater – someone that stays away from food that includes added preservatives. This doesn’t restrict them from being a complete foodie, just someone conscious about unnatural ingredients.
    • Locavore – this is a person who loves to support food markets and local businesses. They strive to only eat locally sourced food, as such showing an appreciation for where their food as originated from.
    • Low Carbon Eater – while not restricting themselves to local produce, a low carbon eater is still mindful about the environment. Where possible, staying clear from companies that have a negative effect due to their carbon footprint or by releasing harmful emissions into the atmosphere.
    • Vegetarian – there are a number of factors to the vegetarian lifestyle. Although ultimately, a true vegetarian excludes meat and meat biproducts from their diet.
    • Lacto-ovo Vegetarian – while still a vegetarian in every sense of the word, they won’t intentionally eat eggs. Although dairy and products containing eggs are still allowed, just within reason.
    • Ovo-Vegetarian – again, looking at vegetarianism, there are no meat or biproducts consumed. However, while an ovo-vegetarian won’t eat dairy, eggs can still play a part within their diet.
    • Lacto Vegetarian – much like the previous take on vegetarianism, only this time will happily eat dairy products, but not eggs.
    • Vegan – possibly the easiest to identify, as vegans simply won’t eat any food produced by animals, directly or indirectly.
    • Pollotarian – will consume poultry/fowl, however, won’t eat red meats. They’re unable to eat fish or seafood either or choose not to.
    • Flexitarian – while not a strict vegetarian, flexitarians mainly stick to a non-meat and fish diet. However, don’t necessarily avoid meat/fish altogether, just do so in moderation.
    • Pescatarian – aside from meat-eaters, vegetarians and vegans, pescatarians are probably the next most common foodie. They may not eat meat, but will regularly consume fish and seafood.

Why are there so many different types of Foodie?

It’s worth remembering, there may be a lot of different types, but they all exist for a reason. While the likes of the vegetarian or vegan foodie may appear more straight forward to cater for, it’s good to understand the wider connotations.

After all, life is about personal choices and food plays a major role in our everyday lifestyle. The cutting out of particular food groups can be for ethical reasons, related to dietary requirements or religious belief.

Likewise when it comes to allergies and intolerances. Especially if there’s an underlying health issue as to why certain foods need to be avoided. In which case a restricted diet can potentially cause serious implications if not adhered to correctly.

However, with so much choice available, knowledge and understanding is very important. Therefore, just because you eat and drink to a certain set of criteria, that doesn’t mean you can’t still be a foodie at heart.
