What you’ll do

The Flavours of the Jewish Roman Tradition: Cooking Class at Sunset in the Jewish Ghetto Soak up the atmosphere of one of the most authentic neighbourhoods in Rome and test your cooking skills in this fun and entertaining cooking class in the Jewish Ghetto Get ready to test your cooking skills in this authentic, lovely activity in the heart of the Jewish Ghetto, to take a break from the attractions’ visiting and enjoy an unforgettable experience during your stay in the Eternal City! You will be meeting your host and chef, who will reveal all the tricks to prepare the perfect menu for a Jewish Roman dinner from scratch: you will be able to brag about to all your friends and relatives, back home! The meeting point with your local host will be in Piazza Mattei, a lovely square right in the heart of Rome’s Jewish Ghetto: the whole area bears witness to the stratification of the Eternal City over the centuries and also features great crafts shops, restaurants and street food corners where you can taste the best recipes of the Jewish Roman tradition. You will be left speechless by the relaxed- yet glamourous - atmosphere for which the Ghetto is so famous all over the world! Your chef will be waiting for your group’s arrival at the restaurant, where the class will be taking place, ready to share our best recipes with you and reveal all the tricks to prepare a marvelous dinner! This is an active cooking class, but you will decide if you wish to participate hands-on or not; you may simply sit back, relax and watch the chef at work, while you sip a glass of great wine. Should you wish to participate firsthand, you will have the chance to learn how to make homemade pasta from scratch; you will be cleaning, preparing and frying seasonal vegetables and also tasting the most delicious Roman desserts, that grandmothers have been preparing for their families and grandchildren for centuries! Yum! Italy, and Rome in particular, are famous for their use of seasonal ingredients, which are chosen and selected with great care on a daily basis to enrich, combine or go with meat, fish, cheese, pasta or even desserts: whether you participate in a winter or summer class, you will always be working with what is freshly and carefully selected by the chef on that day. In a winter class, for instance, you would have the chance to learn how to peel artichokes and cook them according to the Jewish recipes, to reproduce one of the best dishes of the Roman cuisine, Carciofi alla Giudia. In a summer class, instead, you would learn how to prepare and fry zucchini flowers, or other delicious fresh vegetables, available during the warmer months, to make the original Fritto Romano. Your dessert will most probably feature an amazing slice of Torta di Ricotta e Visciole, among the most celebrated and famous ricotta cheesecakes, made with simple but heavenly ingredients (i.e. Visciole are delightful sour cherries!). This is the perfect experience for you if you’re looking for an authentic and entertaining firsthand activity in the very core of the Jewish Ghetto in Rome; not an academic and formal class though, rather a funny and tasty afternoon spent with a small group of participants from all over the world and your local chef, preparing your own Jewish Roman dinner! Please note that the restaurant and the cooking class recipes will not be Kosher.
