Temporary art galleries, night bars and street murals give old San Telmo a bohemian atmosphere. Packed with antique shops and rustic meat restaurants, Defensa Street runs through Dorrego Square, which houses a flea market and street artists who attract tourists every Sunday. In Lezama Park, trails meander around tall jacaranda trees and the Italian National Historical Museum. The neighborhood has many establishments that offer dinners with tango shows.

Juan Manuel Sánchez was our guide for a gastronomic and history walking tour at San Telmo. He was excellent, arranging transportation to and from the tour. We enjoyed unique Argentina pizza different than others worldwide. The traditional "fast-food" lunch empanada was delicious. A unique Choripáns sandwiches made with grilled sausage chorizo and a crusty, baguette-style bread accompanied by beer in the historic farmers market was a highlight. Juan Manuel showed us the beginnings of Argentinian elite and migrant historic homes, the historic sites for tango. We learned why this became a center for antiques. And much more. Yes, we recommend this trip.

To start off our guide was very good. The issue was the first place we went was a local bar and we had pizza. We thought we were getting empanadas so the guide did get us some which took extra time. We did not go on a local walking tour for pizza we could get at the corner by our house. The next stop was local market for a traditional sandwich. We arrived 20 minutes before the location closed and they would not serve us. I must say one of our group did stop for something and that took 10 minutes of our time. But the guide should have gone and told them we could not stop. We ended up at an ice cream shop which was excellent.

I did this food tour solo and had a great time with my guide Manuel. He was very knowledgeable about San Telmo. We got a chance to chitchat about his stay in NYC. The Food was fantastic and filling. We even ended with dessert.

Our guide was communicative and very helpful. She managed to accommodate those with vegetarian tastes and those with sore feet in the same tour and we all came away happy.
