One of the best ways to enjoy Spanish food and drink is on a wine tour from San Sebastian. As well as experiencing the wine, each tour will come with its own back-story and insight into the local culture.
San Sebastian is a stunning and picturesque town within the Basque Country. The landscape is lavish and green, where nearby wineries thrive on the rainfall that comes from the Atlantic Ocean. Although due to the rugged coastline, the vineyards are also often found elevated above sea level, among the mountainous slopes.
All of which amounts to the perfect growing conditions and terrain to produce some of Spain’s most popular wines.
Wines of the Basque Country
By booking one of our wine tours from San Sebastian, you can soon escape to the wonderful vineyards of the Basque Country. Experiencing the very best in authentic Spanish wine first hand with a tasting session.
The winemaking in the region is outstanding and the local white wine called txakoli (pronounced cha-koh-lee) sets a high standard. An effervescent variety which is normally quite a dry, acidic wine that the Basque region has been producing ever since the Middle Ages.
Almost exclusively made from the native Hondarrabi Zuri grapes, Txakoli is usually light in alcohol. As such, finding Txakoli wines from outside the Basque Country somewhat of a difficult challenge.
There are actually three sub-regions of Txakoli wine in Spain’s Basque area:
- Txakoli de Getaria – This is the largest of the three regions, and can be found near to the town of San Sebastián.
- Txakoli de Bizkaia – This area produces mineral variations from the vineyards that are situated along the coast in the north-west region.
- Txakolí de Álava – This is the smallest of the three sub-regions, found inland within the Ayala Valley.
