Montepulciano guided walking tour including wine tasting
Durations: 3 Hour(s)
Group Size: 2-15
Montepulciano is a charming ancient city in southern Tuscany. Located 605 Mt above sea level, its origin is Etruscan, the city center was built in the Middle Ages and transformed in the Renaissance.
The city center was built in the Middle Ages and transformed in the Renaissance by the most famous architects working for the Medici family in Florence. The contrast between the narrow Medieval streets and the imposant elegant buildings planned by Antonio da Sangallo the Eldest, Michelozzo and Baldassare Peruzzi is amazing. The tour starts by the church of Sant'Agnese, an important place for religious devotion in the city, where all the Medieval Contrada of the town have exposed their colored flags. The culture of this city is well expressed by the barrel race Bravio Della Botti at the end of August and the popular theater Bruscello. It still animates the streets with their lovely handicraft shops and wine cellars, and the inside of its most important monuments, rich in history and even stories that only the oral tradition was able to transmit.
Through the main street, you will head to the church San'Agostino, the first masterpiece by Michelozzo and reach soon after the most ancient part of the city walls, where the ancient hospital was located. On the track followed by the barrels of the Bravio, you will walk to the cathedral square Piazza Grande to see the Duomo and some of the most representative palaces built in the Renaissance, the Palazzo Nobili Tarugi and the town hall, Palazzo Contucci. In the Duomo, you will see important masterpieces by, among others, Andrea Della Robbia, Taddeo Di Bartolo and the amazing monumental grave built by Michelozzo for Mr. Bartolomeo Aragazzi.
There are hidden parts of the city, partially underground, that cannot be missed. The oldest wine cellar of the town will host you for a wine tasting of the local DOCG red wine, the Nobile di Montepulciano, described as the king of the red wines in a poem of the XVIIIth Century. You will also be given the opportunity to walk through the ancient paths of the Etruscan Age.
