Food and Drink Experiences in Lapland

Covering the Northern-most part of both Finland and Sweden, Lapland is best known as a magical winter wonderland, as well as the home of Santa Claus. Many tourists visit for a chance to spot the incredible Northern Lights, while food and drink experiences in Lapland feature dishes such as Gáhkku flatbreads with cured reindeer and wild Arctic berries picked from the mountains.

There are lots of small towns and villages in Lapland, with many things to do in Lapland, such as unique attractions, like the Santa Claus Village, the famous Ice Hotel and the Sampo icebreaker ship. There are also plenty of opportunities to experience the culture and traditions of the Sami, the native people of Lapland.

Another good thing to do in Lapland, situated next to the Arctic Circle, is Rovaniemi and considered the capital of Finnish Lapland. This town is probably best known as the hometown of Santa Claus, whereby visitors can meet him at any day of the year at the Santa Claus Village.

A superb thing to do in Lapland for children (or anyone) is to visit Kemi, situated in Finnish Lapland in the middle of the Bothnian Arc. This is the site of the famous Snow Castle with its glorious Snow Restaurant, Snow Chapel and Children’s Land. Other very popular attractions in this area include cruises aboard the Sampo icebreaker ship, where you can actually go for an ‘Arctic swim’ in thermal flotation suits.

In a lot of cases there are no direct flights to Lapland, so you must first fly to the capital city of the country you intend to visit; Stockholm for Swedish Lapland or Helsinki for Finnish Lapland.

English-speaking tourists will not encounter any problems getting around in Lapland. Most people in Scandinavia, especially in the popular tourist areas, can speak English. Even Santa Claus is now multilingual!

The Lapland area has a subarctic to continental climate with mild summers and cold, snowy winters. In the summertime, temperatures are usually 10 to 15°C with light rainfall.

In the peak travelling season, December to February, the district experiences an average temperature range of about - 16 °C depending on location. The amount of snowfall will vary by location, but the average number of days with snow cover is about 175 – 225 days each year between mid-October and mid-May.

Of course, December to March is the best time for a holiday in Lapland, when both snow conditions and northern lights displays are at their best. Also during this period, the many ice and snow hotels are open and many snowmobile and husky tours are operated daily.

It goes without saying, that Christmas and New Year are the busiest times, whilst February and March are much more relaxed. As many attractions in Stockholm and Helsinki are open all year round, a visit to one of these cities is a perfect addition to your stay in Lapland.

There are countless things to do in Lapland, including popular highlights such the beautiful National Park which is a great place to practice and learn snowshoeing. Why not book a trip that will combine snowshoeing with a walk straight to wilderness to walk up to Lampivaara? This can also incorporate a break on top of Lampivaara to visit the Amethyst mine, where you can dig your own Amethyst.

So, what are you waiting for, discover the winter wonderland of Finland’s magical Lapland!
