What you'll do
Travel with your guide from Mexico City to Teotihuacan, a UNESCO World Heritage Site also known as the City of Gods. If you’ve opted for an early departure, you’ll arrive soon after the site opens to minimize crowds—and if you’ve booked the private option, your guide will collect you from your accommodation, enabling you to lie in that little bit longer. Neither Maya nor Aztec, Teotihuacan was once the largest city in Mexico, supporting a population of around 100,000. With your guide, wander through plazas, discover the pyramids, and capture photos of structures like the Temple of Quetzalcoatl, also known as the Temple of the Feathered Serpent, as well as the Palace of Quetzalpapalotl. Gain special insight into the complex’s intricate murals and architectural nuances. Hear about the latest archaeological discoveries and theories about the city’s origin and decline. From the top, enjoy your bird’s-eye vantage point of the Avenue of the Dead, the primary road that runs through the center of the city. After your Teotihuacan tour, hop aboard your transport and head to an obsidian workshop to learn more about the black volcanic rock native to the area. Chat with a local family and sample several alcoholic drinks made from the cactus-like agave plant: mezcal, tequila, and pulque. You’ll stop at a local restaurant for a traditional Mexican meal (at your own expense), before returning to the central meeting point—or your accommodation if you booked the private tour.
