Highlights
  • Founded by the Greeks circa 600 B.C.E., Paestum, originally known as Poseidonia after the sea deity Poseidon, exudes a captivating aura. With its dedication to the god of the sea, this ancient city flourished before being embraced by the Italic Lucanians in the period of 400 to 273 B.C.E. In 273 B.C.E., It transformed into a Roman colony, baptizing itself as Paestum. Prior to its founding, a thriving commercial farm thrived on the left bank of the Silaros river, prompting the initial settlers to relocate toward the east, seeking higher ground and refuge from the region's malarial conditions. Upon this elevated calcareous bench on the plain and its coastal surroundings, another minor river known as the Salso or Capofiume charted its course, setting the stage for the city to emerge. From the original settlement on the Silaros, Paestum saw the development of a bustling sea and river port, accompanied by the rise of the esteemed Temple of Era Argiva. It swiftly ascended to become one of ancient Italy's largest and most venerated sanctuaries, with approximately 50 stadiums separating the city from the grandeur of the Heraion and its river-based emporium. As the Roman Empire neared its collapse, Paestum too began to wither. Around 500 C.E., a detrimental malaria epidemic, compounded by the inhospitable nature of the area, prompted the gradual abandonment of this once majestic city. The rediscovery of Paestum traces back to the year 1762, coinciding with the construction of the modern road that now traverses its awe-inspiring remnants.
Itinerary
1
The so-called Temple of Neptune (also known as the Temple of Poseidon) is the largest temple of the ancient polis of Poseidonia (known by the Roman name of Pæstum), built around the middle of the fifth century BC, during its peak period [1]. It stands in the urban southern sanctuary, just north of the so-called Basilica, arranged parallel to it. The cell, where the image of the titular deity of the temple was housed, is divided into three aisles by two rows of two overlapping orders of seven Doric columns, characterized by the stems progressively tapering from bottom to top.
2
More commonly known as the Basilica, due to its almost complete lack of cell walls, pediment, and entablature, it is actually dedicated to Hera, the wife of Zeus and the main deity of Poseidonia. It is a Peripteros with nine columns at the front and eighteen on the sides (24.35x54m). The cell has the well-preserved pronaos, corresponding to the odd number of columns at the front, and it is separated by a central colonnade, partly preserved and meant to support the apex of the roof. At the rear of the cell is the adyton, an area inaccessible to the faithful as it houses the temple treasury.
3
An interesting peculiarity, unique among all the monuments of Doric architecture, is the collar of the capital decorated with pods and sometimes surrounded on the curve of the echinus by a band of lotus flowers and rosettes. During the excavations of 1912, numerous clay decoration elements were collected.
4
The temple was crowned with terracotta painted with imitation lion-headed eaves and concluded with palm-shaped antefixes.
5
A green avenue leads to the Tempio farm. A place of pure relaxation, with entirely natural scents and flavours. Embark on a fascinating Farm tour, where you will be immersed in the captivating world of buffalo and the intricate art of mozzarella production. Discover the intriguing careful crafting of this delectable cheese.
6
As the tour concludes, indulge your taste buds in a delightful mozzarella-tasting experience. Each bite will enchant you with the flavours of the region, as the mozzarella is lovingly created using exquisite local ingredients handpicked for their quality and taste (if the option selected). It's an opportunity to fully savour and appreciate the culinary treasures this farm has to offer..
