San Sebastian: Authentic Basque Cooking Class in the Old Town

What you'll do

Experience the traditional cuisine of the Basque Country in a way few other visitors to the city can claim. This comprehensive San Sebastian cooking class, taught by a professional chef in a historic family restaurant, will give you a crash course in the essentials of regional cooking. Get hands-on in preparing four classic recipes: the Spanish potato omelet, cod in pil pil sauce, a delectable steak with red piquillo peppers, and the renowned burnt cheesecake. Throughout your San Sebastian cooking class, you'll learn new skills like how to perfectly flip a Spanish tortilla, gain a deeper appreciation of the city's culinary culture, and unpack the stories behind each dish as you cook. Finally, it's time to sit down to savor the dishes you've prepared with the perfect drink: Basque cider and two glass of wine. Leave with copies of the recipes so you can enjoy these special Basque dishes back at home long after your trip is over.

So much fun! Loved learning about Basque food, and how to prepare these dishes! The tour guide was very knowledgeable and kind, and the chef was very skilled and had a great sense of humor.

Carlos was fantastic, as was the other chef. We learned a lot, had a great time and the food was delicious! Highly recommend this experience and that Carlos be able to adjust as he sees fit. He knows what he’s doing!

Carlos met us on time and took the mixed group to a nearby restaurant kitchen. There were 10 of us , Brits and Americans, and everyone got on well and it was most relaxed. We sampled several wines and local cider as we prepared 4 local dishes. The cooking was simple and easy to follow so nothing complicated and designed for a fun night rather than teaching any advanced skills. The best thing about the experience was Carlos’ knowledge of the Basque cuisine and his enthusiasm for the area. If you want a fun few hours and to come away with a couple of lesser known recipes (Pil-pil sauce and the Basque Cheesecake) then sign up with Carlos.

Great guide / chef who was very knowledgeable and created a very relaxed environment. The cooking was simple and interactive and some great techniques and local food knowledge but not too serious. Great kitchen space.

It was a unique experience. I would do it again. I don't know if it's always the same menu, but I think changing it up and having 3 or 4 basic menus and rotating them would be a good plan.

We learned so much from this cooking class! Everything that we wanted to learn about basque cooking to take home so it was perfect. Everything we made was so simple and delicious. It was hands on enough that we felt like we were doing the cooking but not too much that we couldn't enjoy the wine! Cannot fault this cooking class. Loved it!

My culinary journey with my boyfriend Toby in San Sebastian was spectacular, thanks to the Authentic Basque Cooking Class in the charming Old Town. Under the expert guidance of Chefs Carlos and Saul, our group was immersed in the vibrant world of Basque cuisine. The hands-on experience of making a traditional Basque tortilla, the delicate dance of preparing Bacalao Pil-Pil, the perfect Txuleta with Piquillo Peppers, and the sweet finale of crafting the iconic San Sebastian Cheesecake left us not only with full bellies but also with cherished memories. The chefs' passion for Basque culinary traditions shone through in their teaching, making every step an enjoyable and enriching experience. The ambiance of the Old Town added an extra layer of authenticity to our cooking adventure. While it would have been a lovely touch to keep our aprons as souvenirs, as I have experienced in other cooking classes worldwide, this small detail did not detract from the overall exceptional experience. This cooking class is a must-do for anyone visiting San Sebastian.
